Learn to observe, investigate, write, and communicate responsibly in English
The APALCE Youth Writing Lab is an optional educational programme for young contributors who would benefit from structured guidance in English writing, reporting, interviewing, revision, and responsible publication.
The Lab teaches writing. It does not sell publication.
Participation, payment, or completion of the programme does not guarantee that an article will be published in APALCE Voices (ISSN: 3140-4502).
What Participants Learn
Participants learn how to:
- Develop a focused and meaningful topic
- Observe people, places, events, and everyday life carefully
- Take useful notes

- Find and evaluate appropriate sources
- Prepare responsible interview questions
- Record and use quotations accurately
- Organise an article for an international audience

Who May Apply?
The Lab is intended primarily for primary, middle, and high school contributors.
An application for a minor must be made by the participant’s parent or legal guardian. The applying adult must provide the required consent and act as the official contact throughout the programme.
The parent or legal guardian may be required to hold current APALCE membership, as specified in the relevant cohort announcement.
No minor is required to create an APALCE membership account or provide a personal email address.
How the Lab Works
1. Orientation
Participants and parents receive an introduction to the programme, authorship expectations, privacy, safeguarding, and responsible use of technology.
2. Topic Development
Each participant identifies a topic based on their own interests, observations, experiences, or questions.
3. Research and Reporting
Participants gather information through reading, observation, note-taking, and age-appropriate interviewing.
4. English Drafting
Participants write their own English article. Instructors do not translate or write the article for them.
5. Feedback and Revision
Participants receive guidance on structure, clarity, evidence, language, and reader awareness. They decide how to revise their own work.
6. Final Reflection
Participants review the writing process, explain the sources and tools they used, and prepare a final draft.
7. Optional Submission
A completed article may be submitted to APALCE Voices through the parent or legal guardian. It then enters the normal editorial process and is assessed under the same standards as all other submissions.

What the Programme Fee Covers
Programme fees cover educational services such as:
- Workshops
- Learning materials
- Topic-development guidance
- Reporting and interview instruction
- Writing feedback
- Revision guidance
- Programme administration
The fee does not purchase publication, favourable editorial treatment, an author title, a press credential, or guaranteed placement in APALCE Voices.
There is no separate publication fee.
Authorship and Generative AI
Every participant must develop and write their own article in English.
Instructors may ask questions, identify problems, explain writing strategies, and provide feedback. They do not write sentences or translate a complete article for a participant.
Generative AI must not be used to generate, translate, or substantially rewrite the article. Any permitted technological assistance must follow the APALCE Voices Submission Guidelines and be disclosed where required.
Participants may be asked to keep notes, drafts, and revision records.
Safeguarding
All administrative communication is conducted through the parent or legal guardian.
APALCE staff and instructors do not use private personal messaging accounts to communicate individually with a minor. Individual feedback must take place through an approved platform and under the supervision arrangements stated for the programme.
The exact school, personal contact details, and unnecessary identifying information of a participant are not required for publication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does completing the Lab guarantee publication?
No. An article submitted after the programme is assessed independently under the APALCE Voices editorial standards.
Will an instructor correct every sentence?
The purpose is to help participants improve their own writing. Feedback may identify recurring problems and suggest revision strategies, but instructors do not replace the participant’s authorship.
Can a participant write in Korean and have the article translated?
No. APALCE Voices accepts only articles originally written in English by the contributor.
Who communicates with APALCE?
For a minor participant, all formal communication is conducted through the parent or legal guardian.
Does the programme fee include APALCE membership?
Membership and programme fees are separate unless a cohort notice expressly states otherwise.
